CMS stores, tracks, and records user0 access and modifications to these files (called7 elements). Elements are stored in one or more central2 libraries where they are available to all project members. 4 For information about using CMS, double click on an1 item from the list of additional topics below. 0 To invoke CMS in the character-cell (terminal) 4 environment, type the following command at the DCL 6 command-line prompt: $ CMS/INTERFACE=CHARACTER_CELL.7 If you see a topic that lists no additional topics, 2 click on the Go Back button or choose On Window + from the Help Menu in the main CMS window.5 For information about using help, choose Using Help from the Help menu above. 2 DECwindows_basics=TITLE DECwindows Basics=INCLUDE Overview7 Information about using DECwindows, such as how to use6 windows, dialog boxes, and scroll bars, is available 6 from Session Manager help. A scroll bar has stepping arrows at6 each end of the scroll region and a slider within the scroll region. 6 For more information about using a scroll bar, double( click on one of the additional topics. 4 Step_arrows=TITLE Using Stepping Arrows6 Stepping arrows are the triangles that appear at each end of a scroll bar. 4 To move the window one line in the direction of the9 stepping arrow, move the pointer to a stepping arrow and7 click on MB1. This allows you to move through the data1 in the window at a pace that is easier to view. 4 Scroll_region=TITLE Using the Scroll Region: The scroll region is the area between the stepping arrows that is not highlighted. : To move the data in the window by one window length, move4 the pointer to the scroll region and click on MB1. 4 Slider=TITLE Using the Slider8 The slider is the highlighted rectangle that appears in: the scroll bar. The size of the slider indicates how much7 of the data appears on the screen. For example, if the: slider takes up 10 percent of the scrolling region, only 4 10 percent of the data is displayed in the window. : To move quickly through the data, move the pointer to the3 slider. Press MB1, and drag the slider through the8 scrolling region. When you release MB1, the information9 from the position in the data indicated by the slider is displayed in the window. 2 About_Release_Notes=TITLE Release Notes" You can find the release notes in+ SYS$HELP:CMSvvu.RELEASE_NOTES, where vv is8 the major version number, and u is the update number. 6 To list all the CMS release notes available, type: * $ DIRECTORY SYS$HELP:CMS*.RELEASE_NOTES. 2 Using_Libraries=TITLE Using Libraries=INCLUDE Overview Ref_copy_def=INCLUDE Occ O_d=INCLUDE M C_m Vw_mi Vw_text8 A CMS library consists of an OpenVMS directory and its 5 subdirectories containing specially formatted files 4 that CMS uses. The library serves as a repository $ for CMS elements and control files.- When you invoke CMS, you must open a library6 environment to tell CMS which library (or libraries) / to use. The library or libraries you specify 3 become the library search list. Even opening one 7 library means that you are setting the library search 6 list; in this case, the library search list contains one library. 3 When you specify multiple libraries, CMS accesses / them in the order in which they appear in the search list. / A library search list can be set in two ways: ( o By pulling down the File menu, then & choosing the Open... menu item to ) open an existing library or libraries+ o By creating a new library or libraries ) (this automatically sets the library ) search list--you do not need to then specifically open it) 3 Libraries can be viewed in any CMS view. Use the 3 following steps to display a library's attributes: 1. Click on the library. 2. Pull down the View menu.! 3. Pull down the Expand submenu.$ 4. Choose the Attributes menu item.3 Creating_Libraries=TITLE Creating a Library 6 You must create an empty OpenVMS directory (by using 5 the DCL CREATE/DIRECTORY command), or direct CMS to 3 create a directory, to contain the CMS library to 2 be created. You then create the library in that % directory by following these steps: 1. Pull down the File menu. 3 2. Choose the New menu item. This invokes the New submenu.1 3. Choose the Library... item from the submenu. 4 The New Library dialog box appears, allowing you to8 specify the directory and options for the newly-created library. NOTE:6 Once you create a library, you must access the5 library exclusively with CMS commands. If a 5 library is accessed by means other than CMS, 5 unrecoverable library corruption may result. 2 Using_Elements=TITLE Using Elements9 An element is the basic structural unit in a library. An0 element consists of a file and all its versions8 (generations). When you create an element and place it1 in a CMS library for the first time, CMS creates9 generation 1 of that element. Each time you replace an8 element in the library, CMS creates a new generation of5 that file. Thus, a generation represents a specific version of an element. : CMS can store any type of OpenVMS file except a directory file. 6 You can perform the following functions on elements: o Create and delete elements o Reserve elements ' o Fetch a readonly copy of an element2 o Insert elements into and remove elements from groups / o Set or change the attributes of an element 0 o View elements, their generations, and their attributes3 Element_attrs4=TITLE Types of Attributes You Can Set for Elements 7 You can display and set the following types of element attributes: / o Whether concurrent reservations are allowed0 o Whether reference copies are maintained for elements / o Whether new element generations are marked for review4 o Whether history information is included when the element is retrieved2 o Whether notes are included when the element is retrieved0 Use the following steps to display an element's attributes: 1. You cannot9 assign a CMS library as a reference copy directory, nor / should it be a subdirectory of a CMS #library. ) To establish reference copies, you must:; 1. Create an OpenVMS directory at DCL level (with the DCL 6 CREATE/DIRECTORY command). For new libraries, you3 may direct CMS to create the directory for you.8 2. If you3 have more than one library in the search list, CMS6 searches the libraries one at a time, in the order in8 which they appear in the search list, until a specified9 object is found. Once the object is found, CMS performs5 the specified operation on the object. CMS will not : continue to search for the object in any of the remaining libraries. : When an object with the same name exists in more than one7 library in the library search list, CMS processes only9 the first occurrence of the specified object and ignores1 any later instances of that object in subsequent3 libraries. Thus, the first instance of the object3 occludes any subsequent instances of that object. 8 You can direct CMS to search for all occurrences of an 3 object by deactivating occlusion for the object. 2 Occ_etb=TITLE Elements Button 9 The Elements button controls occlusion of elements. When9 this button is activated, CMS searches for and acts upon6 the first occurrence of an element found in a library5 (the first library that contains the element) in the library search list. 8 If this button is off, CMS acts upon each occurrence of; the element or elements found in the library search list. 2 Oc_gtb=TITLE Groups Button : The Groups button controls occlusion of groups.
