The installation procedure automatically selects the correct version. In addition, there are two variants of the product itself: o Defrag o Defrag PLUS The installation procedure allows you to choose to install Defrag or Defrag PLUS software. Defrag PLUS contains a scheduling process that allows for periodic scheduling of defragmentation jobs. If you do not wish to use the Defrag PLUS, install the Defrag variant. Defrag provides a more direct interface to the defragmentation process. Customers are adviced to take backup of the existing database before deinstalling the earlier versions of DFO. 2 Software Version Requirements Disk File Optimizer (DFO) for OpenVMS, V3.0 software runs on OpenVMS VAX Version 7.3, OpenVMS Alpha Version 7.3-2, 8.2 & 8.3 and OpenVMS I64 Version 8.2-1 & 8.3. 3 Installing the Software The following steps should help you begin the installation procedure for installing HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V3.0 on your system. For installation details however please go through the HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V2.9 Installation Guide. 3.1 Invoke VMSINSTAL Invoke the VMSINSTAL procedure using the following command: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL saveset-name device-name OPTIONS N Where: saveset-name is the installation name for the component. For the HP Disk File Optimizer, use the following: DFG030 1 device-name is the name of the device on which you plan to mount the media, for example, MUA0:. It is not necessary to use the console drive for this installation. However, if you use the console drive, replace any media you remove when the installation is complete. OPTIONS N indicates you want to see the release notes. If you do not include this parameter, VMSINSTAL does not ask you about the release notes. Review the release notes before proceeding with the installation as they could contain additional installation information. 3.1.1 Continue Installation If you see the following message: %VMSINSTAL-W-ACTIVE, The following processes are still active * Do you want to continue anyway [NO]? Enter Y and press Return, else go to the next Step. 3.1.2 Confirm the state of the system backup To the following message: * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [Yes]? Press Return. 3.1.3 Release Notes option Respond to the query on the 'Release Notes option': Release notes included with this kit are always copied to SYS$HELP. Additional Release Notes Options: 1. Display release notes 2. Print release notes 3. Both 1 and 2 4. None of the above * Select option [2]: Enter the number of the desired option and press Return. 2 3.1.4 Continue Installation To the following question: * Do you want to continue the installation [NO]? Enter Y and press Return. 3.1.5 Purge HP Disk File Optimizer files Purge files belonging to previous installations and usage of the software, if you want to recover storage space on your disk. Answer the following question to do so. * Do you want to purge files replaced by this installation [YES]? Press Return to purge old files, else enter N and press Return. 3.1.6 Confirm the PAK registration * Does this product have an authorization key registered and loaded? Enter Y and press Return. 3.1.7 Run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) Answer yes to the following query to run the Installation Verification Procedure (IVP) * Do you want to run the IVP after the installation [YES]? Recommendation: Running the IVP procedure is recommended. Press Return to run the IVP, else enter N and press Return. The rest of the installation procedure is concerned with the specific DFO variant you wish to use - DEFRAG or DEFRAG-PLUS. For specific information regarding the installation steps that follow please read the Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS Installation Guide. 3 4 New Features/Enhancements in DFO V3.0 This section documents new features and/or enhancements provided in DFO V3.0. Moving DFO from P0 to P2 space DFO is enhanced to defragment large capacity disk that was earlier limited to a smaller capacity disk. DFO now performs defragmentation completely irrespective of the amount of data and size of the disks. To avail the required number of virtual pages for large capacity disk defragmentation, DFO is moved from P0 to P2 space, and this includes the following changes: o Design is changed to use 64 bit pointers wherever required instead of 32 bit pointers. o 64 bit version of the relevant system services (that provides the virtual pages) is used. It can now perform defragmentation for disk capacities greater than 100 GB. In earlier versions, DFO would terminate abnormally with "SYSTEM-F-ILLPAGCNT, illegal page count parameter" error when used to defragment large capacity disks. ________________________ Note ________________________ This feature is supported only on OpenVMS Alpha and I64 platforms. ______________________________________________________ 5 Problem fixed in DFO V3.0 - The "IN USE" message dispalyed in the log file while consolidating the free space incorrectly conveyed that the pre selected files for moving from one disk location to another were in use and could not be moved, although the files were not in use. The actual scenario was that the pre selected disk space selected for moving the files was occupied. 4 The code has been modified to display the "PDSIO" (pre-selected disk space in use) message instead of the mentioned "IN USE" message. This correctly conveys that the pre selected disk space was in use and not the files. The above problem was reported in WFM 3214531845- 321 and has been fixed. - When the DEFRAGMENT operation is specified along with /TIME_LIMIT and /EPILOGUE qualifiers, the /EPILOGUE procedure is aborted if the defragmentation procedure is completed within the time limit specified. However, the /EPILOGUE procedure does not abort if the defragmentation exceeds the time limit specified and executes as expected. The code has been modified such that the time limit specified for the /TIME_LIMIT qualifier does not effect the /EPILOGUE procedure. If the defragmantation is complete within the time limit specified, the expiration timer is cancelled and the epilogue is executed. The above problem was reported in WFM 2207745084-221 and has been fixed. 6 Known Problems and Restrictions This section describes known problems and restrictions for V3.0 of the HP Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS. 6.1 Mounting or dismounting the disks Restriction Mounting or dismounting the disks cannot be done through the command file specified in the /PROLOGUE or /EPILOGUE as these sub processes are created with minimal privileges. 7 Truncating Directories There has been a couple of requests to have HP Disk File Optimizer truncate directories. Instead of adding this feature to DFO, you should use the SET FILE/TRUNCATE DCL command. Directories never shrink they only grow. Even though you delete files in a directory, the allocated space for a directory stays the same. 5 The following shows an example using the SET FILE/TRUNCATE command to truncate a directory: $ DIRECTORY/SIZE=ALL DIR/SIZE=ALL [SLICK]MAIL.DIR Directory DSA422:[SLICK] MAIL.DIR;1 115/140 $ SET FILE/TRUNCATE [SLICK]MAIL.DIR $ DIR/SIZE=ALL [SLICK]MAIL.DIR Directory DSA422:[SLICK] MAIL.DIR;1 115/116 Total of 1 file, 115/116 blocks. Notice in the above example that the directory is 140 blocks in size but the end of file is at block 115. The directory is then truncated to 116 blocks with the SET FILE /TRUNCATE command. 6
